Small SC Private College Competes in NCAA Championships
05.18.11 02:15 PM

A tiny private school in the Palmetto State has been catching the attention of golf pros and major players since it has been making a name for itself as a possible contender to win the NCAA Division II Men's Golf National Championship, which is slated to take place this week at The Shoals course in Florence, Alabama. This is not the first time Newberry College has accomplished such a prominent spot in the competition, they were previously selected;  however, the team’s placement in the competition this week DOES make history. This is the first time in history of the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) that a school from the conference has qualified for the NCAA National Tournament for the second time. The team, which is ranked at No. 14 currently, is only one of 20 teams to qualify to participate in the championship.

During this past season, the team has won first place in numerous tournaments including the prestigious Rutgers International, and also the Honda of Columbia Fall Classic, which was played at Mid Carolina Club in Prosperity, South Carolina, the team’s home course. Newberry College players such as Ben Lown, Matthew Killen, Daniel Stanley, Matthew Campbell and chandler Gruenmeier are slated to compete in the tournament. Brian McCants is the men’s golf team coach at Newberry College and has been coaching for 6 seasons with Newberry College. He was named the South Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year for 4 consecutive seasons, making him a stand out coach leading a strong team.

The golf program at Newberry College is still a growing sport at the college. This season marks the 5th time in history that the team has qualified for the NCAA regional tournament. They have been a member of the conference since 1997.
