Charleston SC Wins Golf Digest's 2009 Readers' Choice Award!
02.2.10 11:06 AM

Everybody knows that Charleston SC, with its mild climate and ocean views, is one of the best South Carolina Golf Communities in the state, so few were surprised when Charleston/Kiawah received the highest rating in Golf Digest’s 2009 Reader’s Choice Awards. The community, which received a total rating of 87.3 from Golf Digest readers, was also named the 4th best golf city in America by Forbes Traveler.

Located on the Atlantic coast, the unique community of Charleston SC boasts a mixture of historic charm and modern amenities and draws thousands of vacationers each year with its exciting activities and stunning scenery. Charleston SC and the neighboring Kiawah Island are full of gorgeous golf courses and picturesque Charleston SC Golf communities that cater to both vacationers and those who are lucky enough to be able to reside in Charleston on a regular basis. Kiawah Island Golf Resort’s The Ocean Course, for instance, has been privileged to host prestigious tournaments like the 68th Senior PGA Championship, which took place there in 2007, and was recently named the best golf resort in the U.S. by the readers of Golfworld. Created by Pete and Alice Dye, the South Carolina Golf course mimics those of Europe with its windy conditions, and boasts more oceanfront holes than any other course in the United States. The spectacular Ocean Course at Kiawah Island has received a number of coveted awards since its opening in 1991, and the 2012 PGA Championship is slated to take place on this premier course.

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island Resort is not the only course you can choose from when visiting Charleston. Golf first appeared in America with the completion of Charleston’s Harleston Greens in 1786. In keeping with longstanding tradition, the city is home to over a dozen premier courses. The City of Charleston Municipal Golf Course has been pleasing players since 1929. Home of the Charleston City Amateur, this public course was designed by John E. Adems and boasts 18 holes at a par of 72. Shadowmoss Plantation Golf Club has also met with rave reviews from Golf Digest and its readers. Close to Kiawah Island, this semi-private resort is home to everything golfers would expect from a premier facility, including rentals, a putting green, pro shop, and a driving range. Kiawah Island Golf Resort is home to four more breathtaking courses in addition to The Ocean Course, including Cougar Point, Oak Point, Osprey Point, and Turtle Point. All of these fantastic courses, as well as the many others found through Charleston SC, are open year-round, so golfers can enjoy all of the beauty and scenery no matter what time of year they choose to visit.

A great place for not only golfers, but also their families, Charleston SC is full of exciting activities and attractions that offer something for everyone. From remarkable historic structures to beautiful beaches, Charleston SC is a great vacation destination for almost anyone. And you don’t have to take our word for it—just listen to readers of Golf Digest, many of whom know a thing or two about golf and golf getaways. From seaside courses to thickly wooded inland links, the best names in golf course design have put their signature touches on many of the Charleston SC Golf courses.
