Five South Carolina Golf Courses Rank among Golf Digest's Top 100 Courses of 2009-2010
09.16.09 10:06 AM

Since 1966, Golf Digest has been keeping players informed with its lists of the Top 100 Golf Courses. Five South Carolina Golf Courses made the cut for 2009-2010. Each of these five courses offers players something exciting and unique. With seaside views and challenging holes, South Carolina's mild climate makes it the perfect place to enjoy a game of golf, and the most recent list of Golf Digest Top 100 Courses reflects just that.

The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island – Kiawah Island, South Carolina
Slated to host the 2012 PGA Championships, The Ocean Course at Kiawah Island SC is number twenty-five on Golf Digest’s Top 100 Golf Courses. This course boasts the most seaside holes of any course in the Northern Hemisphere. Its proximity to the Atlantic also gives it the distinction of being the course outside of the UK and Ireland most affected by wind. Open since 1991, the gorgeous and challenging seaside course has will soon become one of only four courses worldwide to host all of the PGA’s major tournaments.

Long Cove Club – Hilton Head, South Carolina
At number seventy-three on the list of Golf Digest Top 100 Courses is Long Cove Club of Hilton Head Island South Carolina. Designed by Pete Dye in 1981, the 630-acre course boasts the best in traditional South Carolinian landscapes. Live oaks, pines, and magnolias line the course, and players of all levels can take in beautiful views of scenic marshes while enjoying eighteen-holes of natural splendor.

Harbour Town Golf Links – Hilton Head, South Carolina
Another Hilton Head SC favorite, Harbour Town Golf Links, was also designed by the legendary Pete Dye in 1969. Ranking number seventy-five on Golf Digest’s list of the Top 100 Golf Courses, Harbour Town Golf Links offers players the chance to test their skills against those of the masters on some of the most challenging par-threes in existence, not to mention the infamous eighteenth hole which is often given the distinction of being the most dreaded hold in all of golf. This course is home to the Heritage Classic PGA golf tournament, which is now known as the Verizon Heritage, and some of golf’s most distinguished players—including Jack Nicklaus, Davis Love, III, and Arnold Palmer—have put their games to the test on this demanding course.

Kiawah Island Club – Kiawah Island, South Carolina
At number eighty-five, the Kiawah Island Club’s Cassique was created by Tom Watson in 2000. The 72-par course winds its way through 6,960 yards of fields, forests, and marshes. Reminiscent of the classic courses, Cassique is subject to the winds that roll in from the Atlantic. Taking this into account, Watson created versatile holes that can be played from a variety of angles depending on weather conditions and that challenge players to think outside of the box.

Sage Valley Golf Club – Graniteville, South Carolina
Sage Valley Golf Club in Graniteville SC, was created by Tom Fazio. At number eighty-seven on Golf Digest's list of Top 100 Golf Courses, this exclusive members-only club is 7,258 yards in length with a par of 72.

With its beautiful marshes, mild climate, and proximity to the coast, South Carolina is unquestionably one of the nation’s best golf destinations. With hundreds of courses to choose from, South Carolina has something that will appeal to every player, no matter his or her skill level.  South Carolina Golf Courses offer something for everyone!
