Sumter South Carolina is both a city and a county in the central part of South Carolina. The area known as Sumter SC began as a large plantation settlement and flourished as a region that thrived on agriculture and farming. The region was named for legendary Revolutionary war General Thomas Sumter, who was called the “Fighting Gamecock” as he rallied troops throughout the southern colonies to fight the British. Today, Sumter South Carolina remains a vibrant force in the state as it is home to Shaw Air Force Base, and numerous colleges and universities of distinction like Morris College, the University of South Carolina Sumter, and the degree programs at Shaw Air Force Base offered through schools like Saint Leo University, Troy University and Webster University, which all have campuses in other states. Home to numerous public parks, including the only public park in the country to have all eight known species of swans, Sumter SC is a wonderful community. The Swan Lake park is an important fixture in the community hosting both the Iris Festival during Memorial Day Weekend and the Swan Lake Fantasy of Lights each Christmas. This light show is the largest FREE light show of its kind in SC.
