2010 BMW Pro Am Tournament Highlights
05.19.10 10:51 AM

At this past weekend’s BMW Charity Pro Am Golf Tournament in Greenville South Carolina, Justin Hicks took home the win after he shot a 66 in the final round at the Thornblade Golf Club. This is Hicks’s second big win on the Nationwide Tour; in 2008 he first captured a win on the tour when he won the Ford Wayne Gretzky Classic which pitted him against Casey Wittenberg. Hicks seems to have been waiting for his chance to roll out another win as, on Sunday, he needed only a two-putt par on the final greens. He finished with a great three-foot birdie which put him two strokes under Kevin Chappell, who shot a 68.

During most of the tournament, folks were watching Fabian Gomez, who was last year’s runner-up after the tournament went to a playoff. Gomez led for 54 holes and was thought to a definite shoo-in. Gomez, however, could not pull it off and he ended up bogeying the final hole and placed sixth overall. It was not until the last round that Hicks soared into top position; he was tied for fourth and three shots behind Gomez when the last round began. Lucky for him, the BMW Charity Pro Am Golf Tournament’s format gave him an advantage and paired him with Gomez in the final round. That’s when Hicks kicked it into high gear and really shined.

In his first six holes, he had many amazing shots and pulled off three birdies. At the final round, the competition got stiff and, at one point, there were five players tied for the lead position and another five players that were just one shot away from it. He was able to stay in the lead by scoring two birdies on the 14th and 15th holes before the tournament had to be put on hold because of a passing thunderstorm. The delays only lasted an hour and gave Hicks some time to process his one-shot lead. Once the tournament restarted, the possibility of another playoff like last year’s seemed imminent. However, Gomez’s second shot ended his chances of holding out as the leader when the ball fell to a bunker. After this, Hicks saw his chance and hit a 7-iron 173 yards to a near perfect point, giving him the chance to take home the win.

The Thornblade Golf Club is the home of the BMW Charity Pro Am Golf Tournament and every year this Greenville SC Golf Course seems to get more and more beautiful. Thornblade SC Golf Club is located in a fantastic location in the Upstate of South Carolina, convenient to I-85 and cities such as Greenville and Spartanburg. A signature part of a master planned community, the 18-hole golf course is one of many fine amenities offered in this private setting. The BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by SYNNEX Corporation began in 2001 and has since raised and distributed almost a whopping $7.3 million dollars to some 125+ charities that work in the Upstate of South Carolina and in the surrounding regions, including areas that extend into Western North Carolina. BMW owns and operates a manufacturing center in nearby Spartanburg SC and works in tandem with other agencies to forward this remarkable event each year. During the tournament, amateurs and celebrities compete together for individual prizes and cash donations to the charities of their choice. Beneficiary charities are selected by South Carolina Charities, Inc., and work to make this beautiful region of the Palmetto State a better place.
